Glacier National Park
Montana, September 2026
In September of 2026 my wife and I visited Glacier National Park in Montana for about 8 days. We had gone to Switzerland the summer before, and I thought that it would be good to get to know my own country, and especially its mountains, before going abroad again. This was our first trip west in search of mountains.
Logan Pass, in the photo below, is 6,646 feet above sea level. Here the continent is divided three ways: rain falling in one part ends up in Hudson Bay, while that falling in the other two parts flow to the Atlantic or the Pacific oceans.
The park has something like 150 trails. Many of them are long — 10, 15 miles — which means that we could not manage them. We are getting on in years, and I was carrying a photo bag that weighed about 25 pounds. Still, everyday we went on at least one, and more often two trails of up to 5 miles in length (in and out). It was exhilarating. I’m a compulsive photographer, shooting everything, and often taking several shots of the same thing, with slight adjustments to the camera’s settings, or the framing and composition.
