The Highline Trail begins at Logan Pass, the highest point in the Park, and travels quite a few miles to the other trailhead, “the Loop.” The total trip there and back is something like 15 miles — much further than we could manage. My real challenge, however, was the closeness of the trail to a sharp drop-off. I have acrophobia — a fear of heights. I thought I could be desensitized to the danger, but I was wrong. I made it past the most precipitous part of the trail but lost interest in continuing. You can see what made me anxious in the first few photos.

After this short jaunt on the scariest part of the Highline Trail, we went on eastward to another trail, that to St. Mary Falls. Edith stayed there while I went perhaps another half-mile to Virginia Falls, shooting everything that interested me as I walked. A fire from years before left some tree trunks standing. Edith said they made her sad; I found them visually interesting. The leaves were changing while we were in the Park, and the late-afternoon sun shone through them.
